Encounter of Two Worlds

The conquest of the island by Spain begins in 1510 with a lengthy operation of exploration and conquest, full of bloody incidents in charge of Diego Velazquez. With the foundation of Our Lady of Asuncion of Baracoa in 1512, the foundation of other six villages comes. Mining and gold extraction with the indigenous work through the called system of “Encomienda” will be later replaced by the black exploitation, the plantation system and the slave’s work.
