Havana or San Cristobal de la Habana

publié 2017-06-09 par Rogelio Zaraboso

The village of San Cristobal de la Habana, today called Havana, was founded on November, 16, 1519, under a Ceiba tree that rose up next to Havana’s Bay. In the present day, the city of Havana is among the most populous city in Cuba.

Ernest Hemingway compared it with Paris and Venice and the Spanish poet, Federico Gracia Lorca, qualified it as a “wonder”. The fact is that Cuba’s most cosmopolite city faces with splendor and intelligence the global challenges that frighten prosperous metropolitan areas.

Military fortresses like La Fuerza and El Morro, which even now maintain the city’s typical appearance, were built relatively soon. La Fuerza, with its eight meter wide walls, was, in addition, the house of the governors for more than a century.
