Cinema of Santiago de Cuba


When talking about cinema of Santiago de Cuba we cannot forget to mention one of the most outstanding figures of international and Cuban cinema: Santiago Alvarez. Its documentary Now (1965), about racial discrimination in the U.S. is considered by specialists the origin of the current video clip. He made other important works, such as Ciclon, Muerte al Invasor, Hanoi, Martes 13, L.B.J. and 79 Primaveras, classics of the contemporary filmography. Founder and director of the Latin American newscast ICAIC for over 20 years, the work of this Cuban filmmaker stood out for the active presence of journalism, the reflection of important historical events like the Vietnam War and the invasion to Cuba in 1961, the great use of montage and the use of the soundtrack as a part of the dramatic action.
