The Cuban Stonehenge that awaits you in Viñales

Published on 2020-04-21 by Norlan Echevarria

The Viñales Valley is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the Cuban geography. But some 200 million years ago, it was submerged in the primitive seas of the super continent Pangea.

For millions of years, the calcareous sediments contributed by an infinity of small organisms, subjected to the strong pressure of the ocean, were consolidated in the depths as a huge stone massif.

After reaching the surface by various tectonic movements, the gigantic mountain suffered the effects of erosion, to end up forming the Viñales Valley that we know today. The mogotes that characterize its geography are all that is left of that enormous conglomerate of Jurassic sediments.

However, one of the most curious stone formations in the valley is very close to the Mural of Prehistory, there are certain vertical stone relics that geologists have called "Stonehenge", due to its resemblance to the famous British megalithic temple.

These rocks, at first it was speculated that they could be an aboriginal ritual enclosure, but the archaeological investigations, took for granted the human intervention in their formation. Everything is the result of the wonderful work of nature, which awaits you recovered.
