La Güira, a combination of history, nature and culture

La Güira Park, in the Pinar del Río municipality of Los Palacios, attracts hikers for its scenic beauty and the harmonious combination of contemporary elements.

Singular sculptures accompany the visitors throughout their journey, especially those preserved since the creation of the site in the 20th century, including Apollo with flute, Satyr, Faun, Sphinx and Monkey with lantern; as well as others conceived by Pinar del Río artists.

The complex, located in the extreme southeast of the Sierra de los Órganos Mountains, has restaurants, swimming pools, an amphitheater, bungalows for accommodation, and offers the possibility of seeing buildings that treasure objects and works of art of Asian culture.

The former Hacienda Cortina, in reference to its owner, the lawyer José Manuel Cortina - one of the wealthiest landowners in Pinar del Río who acquired it in 1906-, currently constitutes a perfect combination of history, nature and culture.

According to various sources, the charms of the place - located about 130 kilometers from Havana - made it possible to visit almost all the presidents of the pseudo-republic at some point, including renowned artists such as Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf.

The park encompasses just over 18,760 hectares, endowed with a semi-deciduous forest and pine forest; and inhabited by a diversity of species of flora and fauna, especially about 180 birds and trees, such as the Tocororo (Cuban Trogon), Carpintero (Cuban woodpecker), Zorzal (Turdus), Cartacuba (Cuban Tody), Tomeguín del Pinar (Cuban grassquit), Aparecido de San Diego (Red-legged honeycreeper), Bijirita (Palm warbler), Garcilote (Great blue heron); or the so-called Passenger Tree, the Algarrobo (Albizia saman) and the Roble (Oak).

In addition to the natural pool, there are rowing boat rides on the artificial lake created taking advantage of the presence of the San Diego River, an opportunity to enjoy the charms of the nature of La Güira. (Evelyn Corbillón, ACN)
