The population of Villa Clara amounts to a total of 792,408 inhabitants is the fifth most populous in Cuba after Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín and Granma. It has five population settlements considered historic villages: Remedios, Santa Clara, Sagua la Grande, Caibarién and Placetas; as well as six classified, demographically, as a city (more than 20,000 inhabitants): Santa Clara, Sagua la Grande, Caibarién, Placetas, Manicaragua and Camajuaní.
The official language is Spanish and the demonym of the locals is Villaclareño.
As in the rest of the Republic of Cuba, sovereignty resides in the people, from which comes all the power of the State.
Economy of Villa Clara
Industrialized province as few, has a centuries-old tradition based on the sugar production and chemical, leather and steel spheres that, with the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, would be enriched with its expansion, modernization and incorporation of exponents of other branches such as textile, biotechnology, machinery and telecommunications, automotive, as well as the growing tourist demand of the city, the Northeast Cayería of the territory and the export of medical services.
The territory, constitutes an important scientific pole with reference in the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas, one of the most prestigious in the nation.
Health & Education
The birth rate is approximately 13.8 per thousand habitants, the mortality rate is just under 7.7 per thousand habitants and life expectancy is over 76 years. Access to health and education is completely free and in the province there are two of the most important centers in these categories: The Central University "Martha Abreu" of Las Villas and the Ernesto Che Guevara Cardiocentro.
Sports & Culture
Dissimilar artistic and literary manifestations are latent in Villaclareña culture. The plastic arts, dance and theater, are part of the identity of the destination. From plans and activities in neighborhoods, carnivals and parrandas; to festivals, artistic tours, events such as:
- International Chamber Music Festival, "A tempo con Caturla".
- Verbena of Gloria Street
- National Trova Festival, Longina.
- International Book and Literature Fair.
- Winter Festival, The Metal City Rock Festival.
- The renowned Remedian Parrandas, declared by UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity, all conceived, for the enjoyment and spiritual enrichment of the villaclareños.
Villa Clara province has been during many years, very powerful at sports, surpassed only by Havana. Several people have shone in the sport of Santa Clara and the city has a large number of Olympic World Medalists: in Baseball: Eduardo Pared, Ariel Pestano Valdés, Victor Mesa. Pablo Lara in Weightlifting, Manuel Mantilla in Boxing, Alexis Vila in Wrestling.
