The Diego Velazquez House hosts the Museum of the Cuban Environment

What was the home of Diego Velazquez, in Santiago de Cuba province, celebrated 50 years of hosting in its facilities the Museum of Cuban Historical Environment, a place that arouses the interest of nationals and foreigners, who can appreciate the evolution of furniture and domestic environments in colonial era.

This property, with significant architectural values, is considered the oldest in the Americas, it was built in the years of 1516 to 1530 to be assigned to the Governor's House on the upper floor, while House of Trade and Commerce and the gold smelting furnace was on the lower floor.

The Museum of Cuban Historical Environment opened its doors on November 30, 1970, in this solid building, with exterior walls built with ashlars (carved stone blocks) and inside there are wooden posts inserted into the walls.

It was the archaeologist, restorer of architectural works and specialist in Arts, of Catalan origin, Francisco Prat Puig, who was at the head of its rescue to show a chronology of the development of the art of furniture in Cuba, domestic environments and their interior decorations from the 16th to 19th century.
