Trinidad de Cuba has been since its inception as a city, one of the most prosperous and concerned with the popular and national culture that was presented on its premises. Among its main cultural facilities can be found the Brunet Theater, which dates from December 1840, a building built by Count Brunet, an important figure of the Trinitarian colonial period. Of this property, only its ruins are preserved on Gutiérrez Street and it was refurbished as a Beer House in Trinidad, of the Palmares extra-hotel chain.
Another building that has survived to this day and has completed the restoration period by the Trinidad Conservative Office is the Charity Theater. One of the most beautiful specimens of its kind in the province and it has about 600 lunettes, which makes it the largest in the entire province of Sancti Spíritus.
The municipality of Trinidad has 5 cinemas of 35 mm. located two in the city (Romelio Cornelio and Guamuhaya) and the remaining three in rural towns (Condado, FNTA, Casilda). There are also 5 video rooms located in Trinidad, San Pedro, Felicidad, Casilda and FNTA. You also have two 16 mm modules. that work in a mobile way in the prioritized areas of the Turquino Plan "Manatí" (Mountain).
In line with new technologies, Romelio Cornelio cinema promotes large-screen projections of files and documentary materials originally conceived for video and for CD. Of these, this trinitarian cinema maintains an area of external loans, at reasonable prices, whereby, the inhabitants of the Caribbean Museum City, can take interesting films for adults as well as for children.
On the other hand, the Romelio Cornelio cinema, the dark room that distinguishes the once third Cuban villa, is part of the country's premiere movie theater system and hosts the Cine Clubes event held in our province every year. In its screen they have been able to see the majority of the Cuban cinematographic productions and those that have had like scene, the streets, the valley and the inhabitants of Trinidad, have had their premier in this cinema.
So you can mention films like Lucia de Humberto Solás who in one of the many interviews he granted, infinitely thanked the almost magical collaboration of the city by providing much more drama to the climax scene of his film. A time when the visual effects did not have much more than the ingenuity of the editor or the good fortune of the weather on the day chosen for filming. This film is from 1961. Afterwards, others like El hombre de Maisinicú followed, The Last Supper also filmed some scenes in the Valle de los Ingenios de Trinidad and novels such as Sol de Batey and Indigo Blue. In more recent times we can talk about several co-productions such as Back to the past, Miranda returns or Bolívar, the man of difficulties. Each of its filmmakers has been grateful for the conservation of the environment of this city, of its people, of histrionics that are printed as extras to each of the scenes in which they are involved.
But Trinidad, has also been the refuge of many documentary filmmakers who have found in the production of images with a story to tell in less time, how to reciprocate Trinidad's attention and culture.
Highlights include titles such as Illuminated City, timeless city, City of hope, A Gift from Heaven, Return to Trinidad, Invisible Soul, Between Lights and Shadows, Stories from a world apart ... and so many others that the list would be endless.
Cinema in Sancti Spíritus
Among its main cultural facilities is the Conrado Benítez Cinema, a modern three-level eclectic building, which still dominates in front of the Serafín Sánchez Park. The magnificent building opened its doors in 1927, as the headquarters of the luxurious Renaissance Theater, which also had a cinematographer. The first two levels were for cultural activity, the third for offices. After becoming the property of the State, in 1960, it was repaired and returned to provide services such as cinema, until today.
Other options in this area are the recently remodeled 3-D Theater and Cinema Hall, inside the former Serafín Sánchez cinema, located in the central park of the main city.
